CWS Sliding & Patio Doors: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide
We stock and install CWS-compatible sliding and patio door rollers, handles, locks, and weatherstripping across Los Angeles, with most parts replaced same-day for $180 to $540 installed depending on the component. Owners typically discover a part has failed the same way every time: the door that used to glide now needs a hip check, the lock stopped catching, or air started whistling through the seal during Santa Ana winds. Here’s the part most general contractors won’t tell you: CWS doors are built to Florida wind codes, which means their hardware is heavier-duty than what big-box stores sell as “universal” replacements. Using the wrong roller on a CWS panel is the fastest way to ruin the track.
Since 2009, we’ve matched CWS parts to the right series across Los Angeles neighborhoods from Sherman Oaks to Long Beach. We’re an independent service provider, not affiliated with CWS, but their hardware is one of the eight lines we work with daily, alongside PGT, CGI, and ES Windows.
Which CWS Models This Applies To
CWS manufactures three sliding door lines you’ll find in Los Angeles homes: the CWS 9500 Series (aluminum, thermally broken), the CWS 7000 Series (vinyl, single-hung slider configuration), and the CWS Impact Series (laminated glass, Miami-Dade rated). Each series uses a different roller housing and track profile, and the parts do not swap between them.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha we see weekly in Los Angeles: CWS labels their hardware with a four-digit stamp on the roller housing or the lock faceplate. That stamp is the series code, not the part number. If you order a part using only the stamp, you’ll get the wrong component about a third of the time. The right approach is to pull the panel partially open and measure the roller diameter with a caliper: CWS 9500 rollers are 1-1/4 inch diameter, 7000 Series are 1 inch, and Impact Series are 1-1/2 inch with a stainless steel housing. Write that measurement down before you call anyone.
On the OEM question: CWS-branded rollers and locks are solid, but we’ve found the aftermarket equivalent from Prime-Line and Slide-Ezz outperform the originals by roughly two years in coastal Los Angeles conditions. That’s because the aftermarket versions use sealed stainless bearings instead of the OEM zinc-alloy bearing. If your door faces salt air west of the 405, we recommend aftermarket bearings with OEM strike plates. If you’re inland, OEM throughout is fine.
Signs Your CWS Sliding & Patio Doors Is Failing
- The door drags or grinds when you slide it. This is a roller bearing that’s worn flat on one side. On CWS doors, the bottom two rollers carry the full panel weight (typically 180 to 240 pounds for a 9500 Series). Once the bearing flattens, the steel housing starts cutting into the aluminum track. If you hear metal-on-metal, that track is now part of the repair.
- The lock won’t throw or the handle feels loose. CWS mortise locks on the 9500 use a spring-loaded pawl that corrodes in coastal air. The handle itself is a zinc casting that strips at the spindle after about seven years of daily use. When the handle wobbles more than a quarter inch, the spindle is gone and the lock is usually close behind it.
- You can see daylight through the weatherstripping. CWS’s original pile weatherstripping breaks down under LA’s UV exposure in about four to five years. Once it’s flat, the door loses its air seal and the panel rattles in the track. On windy days in the foothills around Glendale and Pasadena, you’ll feel it in the room before you see it.
- The panel is hard to lift out of the track. This is a sign the roller adjustment screws are seized or the panel has dropped. On CWS doors, the adjustment is at the bottom edge, two Phillips screws per roller. If they won’t turn, the rollers are corroded into the housing and need replacement before you can re-level the panel.
- The door closes itself or drifts open. Your track is out of level. CWS installs to a tolerance of 1/8 inch over the full track length. Los Angeles houses settle, especially in hillside areas like Mount Washington and Echo Park, and that settlement shows up first at the door opening. If the panel drifts, the fix is realignment plus new rollers, not just one or the other.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
Here’s what CWS sliding and patio door part replacement actually costs in Los Angeles right now, installed, with the part included:
- Roller replacement (both bottom rollers): $180 to $310. Price depends on series: 7000 Series runs $180 to $220, 9500 Series $210 to $270, Impact Series $240 to $310.
- Mortise lock and handle set: $195 to $340. Includes removing the old mortise body, installing the new lock, and re-keying to match your existing key if possible. Some CWS locks are re-keyable, some are not; if not, you’ll get two new keys.
- Weatherstripping replacement (full door perimeter): $120 to $190. We use a high-density polyester pile with a Mylar fin that lasts roughly twice as long as the original CWS material in direct sun.
- Track repair or replacement: $280 to $540. If the rollers have cut the track, we can sometimes machine-smooth a minor groove, but a deep cut means track replacement. CWS track is extruded aluminum with a hard-anodized finish; aftermarket track from All-Glass Systems in Vernon matches the 9500 profile at about 40 percent less than OEM.
Every part gets a written line-item quote before we start. That’s our policy on every job, no exceptions: the price in your hands before anyone picks up a tool. Every repair also carries a written guarantee. If the part fails inside 365 days, we come back and fix it, no second invoice. That’s the 365-Day Done Right Promise, and it’s stamped on every work order.
DIY or Call Us?
Some CWS work is genuinely doable for a careful homeowner. Cleaning the track, vacuuming out the debris, and applying a dry silicone lubricant to the rollers is safe and takes twenty minutes. Checking that the handle screws are snug is fine too. What you should not do is pull the panel out to replace rollers without help. A CWS panel weighs 180 to 240 pounds, and if that glass slips out of your hands, you’re looking at a shattered panel or a serious injury. The panel also sits under tension when it’s in the track; pulling it wrong can bend the roller housing. This is one repair where the savings is not worth the ER visit.
If you’re unsure whether your door needs rollers or just a track cleaning, call us at (213) 269-5559 and describe what you’re hearing. We’ll tell you over the phone whether it’s a maintenance issue or a part that needs replacing, and what it should cost. No charge for the conversation.
FAQs
CWS sliding door rollers last 7 to 10 years in inland Los Angeles and 5 to 7 years west of the 405, where salt air corrodes the bearing housing faster. If you’re replacing rollers more often than that, the track is likely out of level and wearing the bearings unevenly. Call (213) 269-5559 and we’ll check the level before you spend money on another roller set.
No, CWS rollers are sealed units and cannot be rebuilt. Once the bearing is flat or the housing is cracked, the roller is done. Replacing both bottom rollers at the same time costs $180 to $310 and typically restores the door’s glide to like-new. We always replace both, never one: a single new roller on a worn panel just shifts the load to the old side.
Most CWS part replacements take 45 minutes to 2 hours once we’re at the door. Roller swaps run 45 to 60 minutes, lock and handle replacement 60 to 90 minutes, and full weatherstripping 90 minutes to 2 hours. We’ll give you the time window when we schedule, and your technician arrives pre-announced by name and photo, so you know exactly who’s at the door before you open it.
We stock CWS rollers, locks, handles, and weatherstripping for the 9500, 7000, and Impact Series on our Los Angeles trucks. Most jobs are same-day. If you have an unusual configuration, like a CWS door paired with a non-standard threshold, the part may take 3 to 5 business days to source. Call (213) 269-5559 with your door’s series stamp and we’ll tell you over the phone whether it’s on the truck or needs ordering.
