PGT Window Installation: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide

If you have a PGT window that needs installation or a failed part replaced, we stock PGT-compatible components and install them across Los Angeles, typically for $220 – $640 per window depending on the part and model. Most PGT window part replacements take under two hours once we’re on site, and we carry the most common PGT hardware on our trucks so we’re not making you wait on a parts order. The way most Los Angeles homeowners discover they need this page is simple: a window that won’t lock, won’t stay open, leaks air around the sash, or has a cracked pane that’s starting to fog between the glass.

PGT windows are common in Los Angeles because they’re built for impact and wind resistance, but that doesn’t mean they never wear out. The parts that fail most are the ones that move: balances, rollers, locks, and weatherstripping. When one of those goes, the window still “works” in the sense that it’s in the wall, but it’s not sealing, not locking, or not staying put. That’s the moment to deal with it, before a small part turns into a bigger problem.

Which PGT Models This Applies To

PGT makes several window lines, and the parts are not interchangeable across all of them. The series you’re most likely to encounter in Los Angeles homes are the WinGuard (impact-rated), SpectraGuard, and ClassicVue lines. Each series uses different balance systems, lock styles, and sash dimensions. The WinGuard line, for example, uses a heavier balance than the ClassicVue because the impact glass weighs more. If you put a ClassicVue balance in a WinGuard sash, the window won’t stay up and the part will wear out inside a year.

To identify what you have, look for the PGT sticker on the head of the frame or the side of the sash. It will list the series name and usually a manufacturing date code. If the sticker is gone (sun and heat in Los Angeles take those off within a few years), we can match the part by measuring the sash weight, the balance shoe profile, and the lock mounting pattern. That’s the difference between an OEM match and a guess. We also handle quality aftermarket equivalents from CWS, ES Windows, and CGI where they’re genuinely compatible, but for PGT windows we usually recommend staying with PGT or a matched equivalent, because the tolerances are tight and a generic part that “almost fits” will fail early.

Signs Your PGT Window Installation Is Failing

  • The sash drops or slams when you open it. This is a failed balance system. The spring or block-and-tackle mechanism inside the frame has worn out, and the window can’t hold its position. In PGT windows, this is often accelerated by years of heat exposure breaking down the internal lubricant.
  • The window won’t lock, or the lock feels stiff and gritty. The lock keeper or the lock itself is worn, or the sash has shifted out of alignment so the two halves don’t meet. PGT’s multipoint locks on the WinGuard line are precise pieces; when they’re off even 1/8″, they bind.
  • You feel a draft even when the window is closed. Weatherstripping has compressed or torn. In Los Angeles, the dry heat plus sun exposure on west-facing walls makes weatherstripping brittle faster than it does in milder climates.
  • Condensation or haze between the glass panes. This means the seal on the insulated glass unit (IGU) has failed. The glass is fogging from the inside, and no amount of cleaning fixes it. The IGU needs to be replaced, not the whole window.
  • The window is hard to open or close, or it sticks partway. Rollers or glides are shot, or the frame has shifted. Forcing it usually makes the problem worse by bending the hardware or scoring the track.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Los Angeles, PGT window part replacement and installation typically runs from $220 to $640 per window, depending on what’s failed. Here’s how that breaks down:

Part Typical Installed Cost
Balance system (per window) $220 – $340
Lock or lock keeper $180 – $280
Weatherstripping (full window) $160 – $260
Rollers or glides $180 – $320
Insulated glass unit (IGU) replacement $380 – $640

The range depends on the series (WinGuard parts cost more than ClassicVue because the hardware is heavier-duty), whether the window is accessible from inside or requires a ladder, and whether the part is OEM or a matched equivalent. Every quote is written and in your hands before we start: parts, labor, and any disposal fee, itemized. No change orders, no “we found something else” surprise at the end. That written quote includes our workmanship warranty, and the whole job carries the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if it’s not right, we make it right.

DIY or Call Us?

There are a few things you can safely check yourself: look at the weatherstripping to see if it’s visibly torn or flat, confirm the lock moves freely by hand, and note whether the window is dragging on one side or both. What you shouldn’t do is try to disassemble the sash or the balance system yourself. PGT balance assemblies are under spring tension, and the heavier WinGuard units carry enough stored force to injure a hand or send the sash into the frame. I’ve pulled broken balance springs out of walls where a homeowner tried to force it, and the fix cost more than the original repair would have. If the window is fighting you, stop and call us at (213) 269-5559. The estimate is free, and we’ll tell you honestly whether it’s a quick fix or a bigger job.
